Deborah McFarlane

Born in Montreal, Deborah McFarlane has nurtured generations of young violinists. She holds a Teacher’s Certificate from the Ottawa Teachers’ College as a Music Specialist and studied Music at Queen’s University. Her teachers and mentors have included David Zafer, David George, Lorraine Fink, and John Kendall. She has been a member of the SAA for almost 40 years.

At the age of 19, Deborah was hired by the Ottawa School Board to establish a school strings program. This began a long career that has included several respected Suzuki programs, including Suzuki Kingston Violin (Kingston, ON) and Beaurepaire Suzuki Strings (Montreal, QC). Many of her students have gone on to pursue careers as professional musicians, and almost all of them have continued to play and to share their love of music. Deborah was also a member of the Kingston Symphony for 15 years.

Deborah lives with her husband in a stone farmhouse near Kingston, ON. She maintains a teaching studio with the Canta Arya School for Strings, the evolution of the Kingston program she once co-founded. She is the proud mother of three musicians, and loves practicing the violin with her grandchildren. Her many interests include gardening, dogs, fiber arts and reading.
